behind the scenes

On Monday, February 19, we hand-delivered 24 books to four classrooms at Vivian Conatser-Turner Early Learning Center. Jasmine had the opportunity to tour the learning center classrooms and meet some of the people who work there such as Ms. Kimberly McNatt.

  • From Jasmine:

Soon after Lucy and Emma's projects finished their first deliveries in California and Florida respectively, I began researching and emailing schools around the Birmingham area. With the help of Lucy, we found Vivian C. Turner Early Learning Center in Decatur, Alabama.

Lucy helped order all the books that I would donate. On Saturday, February 10, the 24 books were delivered to me. Inside the box, there were self empowering books with positive affirmations, Spanish bilingual board books, and sing-alongs with lots of bright colors.

Emailing back and forth, we figured out a date that worked best for me and Ms. Kimberly McNatt to where I could drive up to Decatur and give the facility the books. Since February 19 happened to be Presidents' Day, I had the day off of school which happened to work perfectly and align with both of our schedules. Bright and early on Monday, February 19, I drove roughly one hour and 30 minutes to Vivian C. Turner Early Learning Center.

As my sister and I carried the box of books inside the learning center, we were greeted with a friendly Ms. Kimberly McNatt. Her positive energy and smile made me feel warm inside. She gave me a tour of one of the classrooms that holds children from only a few months old to three years old. After that, I helped Ms. McNatt shelve all the books. We replaced the more worn-out books that had been chewed on by younger students who were teething with the new books. While shelving the books, Ms. McNatt about how big of an impact the books will be for the students. Ms. McNatt commented about how a lot of Spanish speaking students will enjoy the bilingual board books. At Youth for Our People, we want to help aid students of all backgrounds from educational poverty.

Ultimately, seeing her smile and explain the impact that the books would have on her students is what drives me to help others. This experience felt so surreal. It feels crazy to me to know that by delivering 24 books, I am impacting over 30 toddlers and preschoolers in Alabama. The impact of the books will have an impact on them for a lifetime. I am driven to help others because I believe that everyone deserves an education.
